Foal's normal position during most of last trimester
Due to increasing size and limited space, the foal commonly takes the position of the head towards the mare's tail. This is important because soon the ability to completely turn around will be nearly impossible
Foal exercises occur during last 1-3 weeks
During the last few weeks, the foal begins periods of high activity, stretching and extending the head and neck and the forelegs. Bumping against the mare's bladder and kidneys and reaching/poking the roof of the uterus near the cervix
These are times of increased discomfort for the mare often confused for imminent labor signs
These "exercises" are very important to ensure the foal will be in the proper position for the easiest and safest passage through the birth canal
